Description
The Kodak Retina I (Type 119) is an iconic pre-WWII 35mm folding viewfinder camera manufactured in Stuttgart, Germany by Kodak AG (formerly Nagel). Produced between 1936 and 1938, this rare pre-war Type 119 is historically significant as the first Retina model to feature an angular, streamlined top-housing cover over the optical direct-vision viewfinder. Fitted with a Schneider-Kreuznach Retina-Xenar 5cm (50mm) f/3.5 lens in a Compur leaf shutter, it represents classic pre-war German precision in a compact drop-bed folding bellows structure.

Condition
Overall Condition: Good
Optics show haze with possible minor dust, free from fungus. The camera body shows heavy cosmetic wear consistent with age, including surface marks to the chrome and body panels, though the leatherette coating remains fully intact. Drop-bed mechanism folds and locks securely. Shutter speeds and light meter vary appropriately, though shutter movement is slow at lower speeds.

Collector's Notes
Manufactured between 1936 and 1938, the Type 119 represents a pivotal aesthetic bridge in Kodak AG's pre-war lineup, establishing the enclosed top cover profile that defined late 1930s 35mm compact cameras. Genuine pre-war German Retinas retain steady demand among historical camera collectors and restoration enthusiasts.
