Description

The Leica M4 is a celebrated 35mm interchangeable-lens mechanical rangefinder camera manufactured in Wetzlar, Germany by Ernst Leitz GmbH. Introduced in 1967 as the culmination of classic Barnack-era inspired M mechanical engineering, the M4 combined the best features of the M3 and M2 while introducing modern ergonomic enhancements, including an angled rapid rewind crank, rapid loading system, plastic-tipped self-timer and advance levers, and bright 0.72x viewfinder optics with parallax-corrected frame lines for 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 135mm focal lengths. Serial number 1234958 confirms manufacture in 1969. Fully mechanical and battery-free operation. Complete with original removable chrome baseplate.

Condition

Overall Condition: Excellent

Cosmetically in exceptionally clean, well-preserved condition with minimal signs of handling and light rub marks on the satin chrome top and bottom plates. The vulcanite body covering is completely intact across the entire chassis without cracks or missing pieces. Viewfinder and rangefinder optical paths are clean, clear, and bright with sharp double-image patch contrast. Fully tested and operational: mechanical focal plane shutter curtain is intact, firing accurately across all speeds from 1/1000s down to 1s plus Bulb, single-stroke advance operates smoothly, angled rewind lever unfolds and turns freely, self-timer operates as intended, and baseplate lock secures firmly. Serial number 1234958. Manufactured in 1969. Fully tested and functional.

Collector's Notes

The Leica M4 is widely regarded by photojournalists and collectors as the high-water mark of traditional Leitz Wetzlar mechanical manufacturing. Combining the wider viewfinder field-of-view of the M2 with faster reloading features, late-1960s German-made M4 bodies offer an exceptional balance of vintage mechanical feel and modern user convenience. An outstanding example for active film shooters or serious Leica collections.
