Description

The Asahi Pentax Spotmatic (SP) is an iconic, fully mechanical 35mm SLR camera body engineered with a robust all-metal frame and an M42 universal screw lens mount. Celebrated for its legendary build quality and smooth film transport, it natively accepts a vast array of classic M42 lenses, including Takumar, Carl Zeiss Jena, and Chinon optics. This example is being sold strictly for spares, repair, or restoration: the mechanical shutter fires, but the reflex mirror sticks in the up position after triggering. The light meter/battery compartment has not been tested, and no lens is included.

Camera body exhibits moderate cosmetic age wear, surface marks, and light metal tarnishing on the chrome top and bottom plates. Mechanical shutter fires, but the reflex mirror stays stuck in the raised position upon shutter release (a classic Spotmatic issue typically caused by dried internal lubricants on the lower mirror return mechanism). The battery compartment and exposure light meter remain untested. Sold as-is for parts, repair, or restoration.

Collector's Notes

The "sticky mirror" syndrome on original Pentax Spotmatics is one of the most well-documented faults in vintage camera restoration. It is almost universally caused by dried, hardened 1960s factory grease on the lower mirror-return gear train under the baseplate rather than broken components. For technicians and DIY camera restorers, a straightforward strip, clean, and re-lubrication (CLA) routine often brings these indestructible mechanical bodies fully back to life.
