Description

The Leitz Wetzlar Elmar 50mm f/2.8 is a classic collapsible standard prime lens manufactured in Germany by Ernst Leitz GmbH. Serial number 1935586 confirms production in 1962. Designed specifically for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras, this classic 50mm focal length optic collapses flat against the camera body when not in use for maximum portability. Features dual distance scale markings in both feet (red) and meters (black), infinity lock button mechanism, aperture settings from f/2.8 down to f/16, and native Leica M bayonet mount. Fully mechanical manual focus design.

Condition

Overall Condition: Very Good

Cosmetically in very clean condition with light surface mark signs on the satin chrome barrel and barrel guide. Focus helicoid turns smoothly across the range and infinity lock engages firmly. Aperture selector ring clicks positively at all f-stops; diaphragm blades are oil-free and actuate crisply. Optical assessment: internal elements show fine cleaning wisps/scratches on front/rear glass surfaces and light internal haze typical for optics of this era, but free from fungus or balsam separation. Serial number 1935586. Manufactured in 1962. Fully tested and operational.

Collector's Notes

The 50mm f/2.8 Elmar introduced in 1957 was the classic standard companion lens for the Leica M3, M2, and M4. Offering a full stop faster performance over the original f/3.5 Elmar, its collapsible design remains one of the most versatile optical choices for street and daily carrying on both film M bodies and adapted mirrorless digital systems. Late-1960s native M-mount examples in working condition remain highly sought after by rangefinder shooters.
