Description

The Nikon Nikkor 20mm f/4 AI is an ultra-compact, professional-grade wide-angle prime lens featuring a native Nikon AI (Auto Indexing) F bayonet mount. Renowned for its exceptionally small footprint—sharing the same compact length and 52mm filter thread size as standard 50mm Nikkor primes—it delivers a dramatic

94^\circ

ultra-wide field of view ideal for landscape, architectural, interior, and street photography. Multi-coated optical glass provides high resolution and contrast while controlling internal flare. Fully compatible with vintage Nikon 35mm film SLRs (such as the FM, FE, F2, F3) and modern Nikon digital SLRs featuring AI metering coupling ridges (D7000 series, D300, D700, D800, D750, D850, Df) as well as mirrorless camera systems via FTZ adapters. Features an all-metal barrel, rubberized focus ring, depth-of-field scale, metering prongs ("rabbit ears"), and standard 52mm front filter thread. Serial number 118822. Complete with front Nikon clip-on lens cap and rear Nikon F mount cap.

Condition

Overall Condition: Very Good

The black anodized metal lens barrel is in exceptionally clean cosmetic condition with crisp white, yellow, and red distance markings and pristine rubber focus grip texturing. Metal Nikon F bayonet mount flange, stop-down linkage lever, and metering prongs are bright and clean. Manual focus ring rotates smoothly and evenly across the distance scale, aperture ring clicks sharply into all stops down to f/22, and aperture blades are completely oil-free and snappy. Optics are clear and haze-free with light internal dust and the faint start of a light fungus thread on the edge of the rear internal optical element. Serial number 118822. Fully tested and working.

Collector's Notes

The 20mm f/4 AI Nikkor is highly sought after by travel and landscape photographers due to its remarkable combination of ultra-wide coverage and diminutive size. It is considered one of the neatest wide-angle designs Nikon ever produced, avoiding the bulky front elements typical of

optics. While early stage fungus threads near the perimeter of rear elements do not currently impact optical contrast or image sharpness, listing the optic transparently makes it an ideal, affordable candidate for shooters or buyers willing to perform a minor optical clean.
